One option for adhering chess squares to your substrate is the use of hot melt adhesive.
For detailed hot melt adhesive application instructions see
http://www.mcb-supplies.co.uk/HotMeltApplication.html

Iron the hot melt adhesive sheets onto your intended substrate.
Once you have the hot melt sheet in position with the backing paper removed,
secure a straight edge, rule or steel square to your substrate at one of the perimeters of your chess board area.
Position a veneer square flat on the work piece with one edge of the veneer square tight against your straight edge,
and the opposing free edge in line with the opposing edge of your intended board area.
Then, at the corners, lightly touch the veneer square with a hot iron.
When satisfied that all squares are correctly positioned, apply a hot domestic iron to the whole surface of your board.
